Professional Tarka Flute - Mara Wood with Deluxe Case - Medium
This traditional Bolivian tarka flute is a wonderful example of a hand crafted ceremonial instrument that symbolises the true spirit of the Andes.
With it’s own unique sound and style, this small charismatic, block shaped flute is usually played in a family of three, with it’s two variants tuned to higher and lower degrees.
Played in ceremonies, festivals and rituals across Southern America, the simplicity of the tarka flute makes it an ideal instrument for anyone to play.
Tarka – Mara Wood
Constructed from one piece of Mara wood, with a fipple at the mouthpiece, the instrument plays in a recorder like fashion with it’s 6 finger holes placed closely together, meaning anyone from adults to children can easily learn to play.
The tarka flute is often adorned with carvings or brightly coloured decorations and paintings. Many cheaper tourist made tarka flutes concentrate on decoration rather than tuning, the instrument you see here is a professional tarka flute and has a plain, varnished finish, adorning the famous Mamani professional branding.
Tuning of the Tarka
The main difference between the tarka and other South American flutes such as the quena and quenacho is that tarka flutes are essentially totally primitive, tribal instruments which are ‘octoctonic’.
They are not specifically tuned to a scale such as G major or D minor etc.. but are ceremonial instruments more so tuned to the instrument maker’s individual ear. In ceremony they are always played in a family of three.
Tarka flutes are normally played by the people who make them and are therefore very personal instruments whereby a family of three played together will produce a combined sound, unique to that particular family of tarkas.
As you can imagine, this results in many interesting and varying tones that help create the mystical and ceremonial aspect to the music they produce.
Although they are not tuned to a particular scale as they are octoctonic, the tuning of the tarkas you see here would ‘most resemble’ Sol minor.
Size – 33 x 3.2 x 3.2 cm
Tuning : Octoctonic – (See description - would most resemble Sol minor)
Free Deluxe Woven Case
This listing is for one tarka flute and comes with it’s own colourful deluxe woven flute case, individually made for your tarka using quality fabric and a specially fine inlay.

These instruments are made from various materials including bamboo, bone and other rare woods such as Jacaranda and Wayacan.
They can have 4, 5 or 6 holes in the front, one at the back, and a u shaped notch at the mouth. The six hole quena has a musical span of 3 octaves.

Concert Tweaked Bamboo Quena
All the flutes sold on Original Artisan are professional instruments and operate at a high standard, but these particular flutes have been specifically ‘tweaked’ by the producers to ensure they are exceptional instruments and perform to the highest possible standard.
These flutes are for the quena connoisseur or the flute perfectionist as you might say.
These flutes are unvarnished and have a wonderful natural feel to them. A truly beautifull and perfect instrument.
This flute was created by a professional Bolivian musician, composer and luthier who has been making instruments, playing and touring South America for over 30 years.
The precision instruments he makes in his workshop are renown around the world.
As with the charangos and all other instruments sold on this site, these flutes are of exceptional quality and should not be confused with other South American souvenir type tourist flutes of substandard quality. Such instruments are manufactured on mass with no attention to sound quality and tuning.
These quena flutes are precision concert tuned to the scale of Sol Major (G) / Mi minor (Em) and have been ‘tweaked’ for optimum performance.
Measuring 14.75 inches long and 1 inch wide, these really are beautiful instruments, each having their own individual characteristics.

These have also been specifically ‘tweaked’ by the producers to ensure they are exceptional instruments and perform to the highest possible standard.
These Walata bamboo quena flutes are thicker, more rustic and slightly harder to play than other types of bamboo quena, designed for the hands of a more experienced quena player, this Walata flute produces a much more solid, sweeter sound than many of it’s rivals.
Utilising skill and technique from a more experienced level to achieve new heights of play, the advanced flutist will gain a greater sense of pleasure from playing this flute than other more easily mastered flutes.
These bamboo quenas are unvarnished and have a beautifully rugged, rustic type look and a real sense of beauty about them, unlike any of my other more traditional looking flutes.
