Quena (Kena) Flutes

Aymara Tweaked Concert Quena - Kena Flute - Jacaranda with Deluxe Case

The quena (kena) is a traditional Andean flute commonly used in many areas of traditional Peruvian music. The quena produces an exceptionally beautiful sound and has been played by the indigenous tribes of South America and their ancestors for countless generations, once being revered as a sacred icon.

Although originating from the mountains of South America, the quena is a favourite of musicians and woodwind players all around the world.

Please view our quena samples page for demonstrations of some of our flutes being played.

These instruments are made from various materials including bamboo, bone and other rare woods such as Jacaranda and Wayacan.

They can have 4, 5 or 6 holes in the front, one at the back, and a u shaped notch at the mouth. The six hole quena has a musical span of 3 octaves.

The professional concert quenas you see here are exceptional instruments made from Jacaranda, a beautiful wood native to South America.

Take a look at our quena and woodwind catagories to view more flutes and other instruments.

Concert Tweaked Quena

All the flutes sold on Original Artisan are professional instruments and operate at a high standard, but these particular flutes have been specifically ‘tweaked’ by the producers to ensure they are exceptional instruments and perform to the highest possible standard.

These flutes are for the quena connoisseur or the flute perfectionist as you might say.

Hear one of these concert quenas being played.

As you can see, they are quite plain and have no frills. A beautifully simple, yet perfect instrument.

This flute was created by a professional Bolivian musician, composer and luthier who has been making and playing these instruments for over 30 years.

The precision instruments he makes in his workshop are renown around the world.

As with the charangos and all other instruments sold on this site, these flutes are of exceptional quality and should not be confused with other South American souvenir type tourist flutes of substandard quality. Such instruments are manufactured on mass with no attention to sound quality and tuning.

These quena flutes are concert tuned to the scale of Sol Major (G) / Mi minor (Em) and have been ‘tweaked’ for optimum performance.

Measuring 14.75 inches long and 1 inch wide, these really are beautiful instruments, each having their own individual characteristics.

Concert Tweaked Bamboo Quena

All the flutes for sale on Original Artisan are professional instruments and operate at a high standard and these Walata flutes are no exception.

These have also been specifically ‘tweaked’ by the producers to ensure they are exceptional instruments and perform to the highest possible standard.

These Walata bamboo quena flutes are thicker, more rustic and slightly harder to play than other types of bamboo quena, designed for the hands of a more experienced quena player, this Walata flute produces a much more solid, sweeter sound than many of it’s rivals.

Utilising skill and technique from a more experienced level to achieve new heights of play, the advanced flutist will gain a greater sense of pleasure from playing this flute than other more easily mastered flutes.

These bamboo quenas are unvarnished and have a beautifully rugged, rustic type look and a real sense of beauty about them, unlike any of my other more traditional looking flutes.

These were created by a professional Bolivian luthier, centered in the heart of  La Paz who is also a highly skilled musician. Like most of our other artisans, this luthier has been making instruments and performing concerts across South America for many years.
