Aquila Ambra 800 – Synthetic version of Aquila Gut & Silk 800 strings.

Until the middle of the 20th century, guitar strings were manufactured exclusively from gut for the treble strings and basses from wound strings on a silk core. The acoustic performance of these sets were very different from those manufactured in modern times. Those historical sets were characterized by a marked timbre and brilliance of the most acute strings in gut, superior to nylon and in many ways the treble strings being more similar to that of PVDF or Carbon. The basses had an exquisitely vocal quality, presenting a less bright and less persistent sonority than modern day bass strings wound on a nylon core and were ultimately more focused on the fundamental frequencies.

The Ambra 800 set was born with the main focus on re-creating these fundamental principles and were specifically designed to best recreate the sound of the 19th century using modern synthetic materials.

Ambra 800 classical guitar strings are created in one degree of tension and reproduce in exact detail a typical 19th century string setup. Each set consists of gut coloured Super Nylgut trebles with a rectified surface similar to those of Aquila’s real gut strings. These imitate in particular the surface of a gut treble belonging to the guitarist Andres Segovia, adopting diameters representing an average of those found throughout Aquila’s extensive research.

The exquisite basses of the Ambra 800 set are comprised of silver plated copper winding over a special multifilament ‘Rayon’ core. The special Rayon multifilament offers a unique and specific balance between metal and core, achieving the same texture of sound found in the original silk wound strings of the era.
